THEME:
Religious fanaticism is prominently explained as a theme in the novel.
The antagonist, Eugene is a religious fanatic whose strict brand of Catholicism led to the disintegration of his own family. Eugene’s brand of Catholicism makes him abandon and saw people of different fate as “heathens” and people of inferior qualities. Even his father, Papa Nnuku is not spared in his son’s effort to rid himself of heathen traditions.

LANGUAGE:
The language of the novel is highly figurative. There is a deliberate manipulation of the syntax of English language. The novelist also borrow phrases from other novels.
The first sentence “Things started to fall Apart….borrows from Chinua Achebe’s novel. There is also the use of proverbs and clear depiction of African culture in the play.

SETTING:
The setting of events in the play alternates between urban and rural.
Although, most of the events takes place in urban areas in Enugu and Nsukka. There is a depiction of
village life when the children visit Papa Nnuku in the village. They also saw the “mmuo” which represents the spirits of their ancestors.

In the novel , life is depicted as a tale of struggle against personal tragedies and defects. this is depicted in the life of the main character, Santiago who struggles with a great fish in the novel. Santiago’s life itself is a tale of struggle with failures and defeat. after spending an unhappy childhood in Africa as a child-an experience which occasionally haunts him as he dreams of lions of the coast of Africa,he also struggles with tragedy in his marriage and poverty. He is a determined character who remains stoic in edicts. As a widower who had been a fisherman since childhood, he refuses to pay attention to the jeers of fellow fishermen who mocks him for his unlucky expeditions at sea.
His first forty days at sea were eventful as he struggles with the boy, his comforter. things however went sour when the boy, on the advice of his parents leaves his boat because they think he has gone solo.
On the eighty fifth day, the old man journeys farther into a place called “the great wall” where he eventually hooks a marlin . he is however unable to get fish to share as they are destroyed by sharks thus depicting life as a tale of struggle against defeat.
